Teach Through Play- Amazing for All Personality Types!

Each personality type has different motivations for what they do, but they can enjoy the same things as long as you understand what it is they like in the activity. Today I am focusing on "invitations to play".  Many of the top performing countries academically focus on this type of learning until the age of 7. These are different set-ups that encourage play and will create teachable moments as you play with them. These also allow a great, creative way to integrate what you are learning about.

For example, here is a set-up to pretend to make pancakes. It ignites their imagination and creates moments for you to teach them about measuring, fractions, math, fine and gross motor skills, and many other things. These types of learning activities are great for kids.

When you set these up for you kids, remember what drives them.

  • The Helper types is going to want to act out things that are familiar to them: everyday life, nursery rhymes, things that make sense to them.
  • Players will want something exciting, like a volcano about to erupt and cover the dinosaurs.
  • The Feelers will want to have figurines to allow deep storytelling and relationships between the characters.
  • Thinkers will want to be able to experiment and test hypotheses.

Here are a few more examples.

Now you might be thinking that this is only good for younger kids, but it can work great for older elementary age too. You could have them create movies with stop animation. They could create their own set-ups with their interests. There are so many different ways to play with these and I hope you can find some that will work for you and the children you teach!

If you have some great ideas or set-ups that worked well, share them in the comments so others can learn from you!!
